Why should I use Kick-off sessions

Project kick-off sessions help define who should do what and when. It aligns the team with the project goals, activities, and future plans.

When should I use this activity?

This activity should always be used at the start of the project, a new phase (such as ideation), or a design sprint.

Step by step guide

Step 1

As with any project, start with identifying the goal. Kick off the session with listing some context around the project and the measures of success. List the background information and if there is any previous work done on this project (research).

Step 2

Roles and responsibilities; assign the individuals working on the project and identify their responsibilities (this is high level knowing who is accountable for what and the level of involvement overall).

Step 3

Key activities: for each team / individual define the key activities and requirements needed to succeed as well as the risks and dependencies to deliver the project.

Step 4

Timeline: include a high level plan of deliverables along the dates.

  • Get the team aligned on the project goal and responsibilities with room to clarify any concerns.

💡TIPS

  • Use the project-kick off session to break the ice and get clarity. It is not a session to discuss solutions nor approaches.
  • Allow room for questions to take place and for clarifying any concerns.
