Why should I create a Problem Stament?

Research insights need to be turned into actionable problem statements for idea generation. This problem statement exercise helps you define the perfect frame for innovative thinking.

When should I use this?

Prerequisite: Use this after gathering research insights and in preparation for the ideation stage and Crazy 8's

Instructions

Prep Time

Run Time

People

4 +

Who to involve

Research, design, product teams (or anyone involved who can help define what the team should solve for)

Step by step guide

Step 1

Gather the key insights you generated form the research and present them to the team

Step 2

Create themes to synthesize insights that are similar under the same theme

Step 3

Add the insights to the Problem Statement Map tackling each quadrant of; ‘who’ ‘where’ ‘what’ and ‘why’ of the problem

Step 4

Scope the problem by looking at the needs to solve. Identify the needs, who is facing them and what value it brings when they are fulfilled.

Step 5

Define the problem statement by using the ‘How Might We Questions’ tool that phrases the problem in a way that promotes idea generation. Check the Miro board for guidance

Step 6

Either collectively or in groups generate as many How Might We (HMW) Questions as possible

Step 7

After brainstorming multiple HMW questions, vote to choose the top 3 to proceed with in the following ideation sessions

🚀 OUTCOME

  • Bring clarity, focus and alignment on the problem you are solving. Clear problems guide the ideation process ensuring the solutions add value.

💡TIPS

  • Not having the answers to the ‘who’ ‘what’ why’ ‘where’ of the problem means you need to do more discovery work.
  • Do not add solutions in your HMW questions as it leads to fewer creative ideas being suggested later
    Ex.
If the challenge is that users have difficulty choosing the right product, a good HMW question would be: “HMW make users confident in choosing their products correctly” | a poor HMW question would be: “HMW tell users which product to choose”
